The McDonnell Trail is a self guided tour through the turbulent history of the Causeway Coastal Route.
THE MCDONNELL TRAIL IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR THAT BEGINS AT THE CAUSEWAY COAST DISCOVERY CENTRE AND FOLLOWS THE MCDONNELL CLAN’S EPIC SAGA ON THE CAUSEWAY COASTAL ROUTE
Starting at the Mc Donnell Trail Centre based at Causeway Coast Discovery Centre, over tea and scones we’ll prepare you with our AV presentation and then leaving the centre you will follow our map and make your way along this famous coastline discovering the true stories of heroism and heartbreak.
Whilst others will simply drive past the landmark sites along their way you will be able to stop and know the tales behind each castle, ruin and viewpoint.
For example, in Ballycastle you may see a quaint harbour and stunning landscapes but you will read the passage below and feel the anguish of the great chieftain Sorley Boy Mc Donnell whilst gazing over to Rathlin Island and the Mull of Kintrye:
“It’s a cold, wet evening here in Ballycastle, in this the fifteen hundredth and seventy fifth year of our lord. Over 700 Women and children will perish this night, aye, my wife and children amongst them.”
His tragedies and triumphs are but a fraction of the tales we have to tell you about the fascinating Causeway Coastal Route. Discover what made this area famous in Spain in the 16th century and what really happened at Dunluce.
